What's new this year

The changes agreed for the 13th competition, in one place. Each one links to the full details.

Changes to the 20 Juz category will be announced at the Awards Ceremony on July 11, 2027, and will apply to future competitions.

  1. 01 The 30 Juz category opens internationally Competitors living in Europe and South America register like everyone else and complete a virtual screening. Up to one male and one female per country join the North American finalists in Minneapolis.
  2. 02 3 Juz joins the main competition No longer a Ramadan event. 3 Juz (Juz 28 to 30) is now a Memorization category for competitors 10 and under, with 10 male and 10 female finalists.
  3. 03 One Best Voice category Best Voice is now a single category. Judges nominate Memorization competitors, who submit a video for the preliminary round before the Final.
  4. 04 Screening for every memorization competitor The only exemption is for competitors who entered the same category in 2026 and qualified for that year's Final Round.
  5. 05 15 finalists per section in 1 Juz and 5 Juz Down from 20, to make room for 3 Juz in the Final Round. Time and logistics are limited, so each Memorization category advances only its top competitors.
  6. 06 A Competition Integrity Policy Clear rules for the virtual rounds: what is expected of every competitor, what is not allowed, and how concerns are reviewed fairly.
  7. 07 A year-round team We are recruiting people who can serve throughout the year in media, design, registration, administration and logistics.

A tradition since 2015

Named after Imam al-Shāṭibī, master of the Qur'anic readings, the competition gathers North America's most devoted students of the Qur'an to recite before scholars, families and a worldwide livestream.

Memorization

Seven categories by portion, each with separate male and female sections.

Recite from memory in the riwāyah of Ḥafṣ ʿan ʿĀṣim. Each round has three questions, four in 30 Juz.

Ten Qirāʾāt

Three categories, one combined section each.

Recite in the ten canonical qirāʾāt and their twenty riwāyāt. Competitors go straight to the Final Round, with three questions, four in 30 Juz.

Best Voice

One category, by nomination from the Memorization division.

Judges nominate Memorization competitors with outstanding recitation. Nominees submit a video for the preliminary round, and the finalists recite on stage.

A virtual test and an oral final in ʿAqīdah, Fiqh, Sīrah, Ḥadīth and Tafsīr.

  1. Feb 1–14

    Registration

    Register online through the registration portal. Islamic Studies stays open until March 15.

  2. Mar 24–30

    Screening round

    A short virtual check of memorization for the Memorization division. You book your time online before the round.

  3. May 1–10

    Preliminary round

    Virtual sessions for Memorization and Islamic Studies, each booked online before the round, and video submissions for Best Voice nominees. The top competitors in each category advance.

  4. Jul 3–11

    Final round

    Finalists book their time online, then compete in person in front of the judges, their families and the livestream.

  5. Jul 11

    Awards ceremony

    The season closes with the announcement of winners and the presentation of awards.

  6. Late July to early August

    Umrah group trip

    The Umrah trip for winners follows the competition. Exact dates will be announced.
